Horse Turnout Blankets

  Turnout blankets are the heavy duty blankets that are made for a horse to wear outside during the winter. Think of a turnout blanket as a snowsuit for your horse. Turnout blankets usually have a tough outer shell made from nylon or canvas that is waterproof and a warm inner lining made from fleece or sheepskin.

Turnout blankets are the most complicated blankets to put on because they have to stay secure even if the horse runs, rolls, or plays outdoors.  Turnout blankets often fasten with a set of two chest straps, two crisscross belly bands, and leg straps. Sometimes there is a tail strap as well.

Your Horse Might Need a Turnout Blanket if:

• You keep your horse outside in a pasture. Your horse might benefit from having a turnout blanket when the weather is very cold or very snowy. The waterproof shell and warm inner lining will help keep your horse warm and dry even in a blizzard.

• You turn your horse out during the winter. Having a turnout blanket is really essential if your horse spends time outdoors during the winter.
